Defining what makes a “sustainable package” has been a major challenge for the industry. However, thanks to the Global Commitment, introduced in 2018 by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN Environment Program, the discussion is now taking place across over 1,000 organizations in 55 countries.
The commitment aims for systemic change in the plastic economy to ensure that packaging is sustainable. Signatory companies and governments promise that by 2025, all packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. The key focus areas are moving toward reusable models, developing recyclable flexible packaging solutions, and establishing collection and recycling infrastructure, supported by Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies.
Progress depends on policies like EPR, which have shown that recycling can be economically sustainable, bringing transparency, efficiency, and incentives for better packaging design and reuse. Collaboration between companies, governments, and society is vital for continued progress.
In this context, Litoplas plays a key role in driving innovations that contribute to this global effort, aiming for collective goals at both national and international levels, fully committed to finding solutions that enhance sustainability.
